Emily’s Story: Caught In The Middle

"There will always be a need for access to good healthcare for hardworking people who are “too rich” for Medicaid but “too poor” to buy adequate health insurance."

Story

Emily and her husband had been patients at SMM for many years, and in 2019 she and her husband were finally granted Medicaid based on income and caring for a grandchild. In 2023, Emily came back to SMM to re-enroll as a patient. She and her husband had lost their Medicaid coverage. Their income had risen to 160% of Federal Poverty Level and their grandchild was now living back with their daughter in their own home. During the initial lapse of coverage, her husband began to ration his medications for diabetes and hypertension thus causing worsening health issues. Then Emily remembered to come back to where she knew they would be welcomed and receive good care. Now both are re-enrolled as patients, both are back on their proper medications at proper dosages and beginning to feel better and more productive at work and home. There will always be a need for access to good healthcare for hardworking people who are “too rich” for Medicaid but “too poor” to buy adequate health insurance.

That’s why continuity of care, a good relationship with your medical provider and a full medical team providing individualized care is vital to every individual’s whole health plan. That is why Surry Medical Ministries Health Clinic will begin to accept Medicaid-insured persons starting in 2024. Entire families, who have children with Medicaid, can all come to the same health center. And, people whose income may fluctuate, do not need to worry about: “Will I lose my doctor if I get a fifty cent raise and then don’t qualify for Medicaid anymore?” Or, “What happens if I change my job and my wages go down? Will I need Medicaid again?”

Surry Medical Ministries Health Clinic will be with you. Our goal is to ensure that quality healthcare is not just for those with large incomes but for everyone, with or without Medicaid.
